Winston & Strawn is gaining a team of 10 partners from McDermott Will & Emery, according to a source. Included in the team is the head of McDermott’s labor, employment and benefits practice David Rogers, according to Big Law Business.

The source claims that Rogers submitted his letter of resignation to McDermott on Friday. Rogers is also a recent member of the firm’s executive committee in Washington D.C. The other members of the team leaving to join Winston are not known.

A McDermott spokeswoman released a statement wishing the lawyers well and explaining that the firm was “excited about the future of our employee benefits practice under its new leadership.” The statement noted that the announcement will be coming soon about its new leadership team.

McDermott has 977 lawyers providing quality service to its clients. Starting January 1, new firm wide chair Ira Coleman took over control. Rogers was considered for the position, as well as a number of other candidates including Lazar Raynal, David Taub, Sarah Chapin Columbia. Raynal has since left the firm to join Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan. The firm has since gone through a number of changes through layoffs and the de-equitization of several partners.

The source indicated that Rogers has not agreed with the direction of the firm’s management to lay off and demote partners. Rogers does not deny it was a contentious departure but would not elaborate more when Big Law Business reached him by phone.
