Former U.S. Attorney Returns to Gibson Dunn
Earlier in the month, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP announced that U.S. Attorney Charles J. Stevens (Chuck) will return to resume private law practice in the San Francisco office. Stevens had been a former Partner at Gibson Dunn, and is the Founding Partner of Stevens, O'Connell & Jacobs LLP, a litigation boutique focusing on government investigations.
Stevens began his career in law practice as an associate at the Los Angeles office of Gibson Dunn. This is the second time that he has returned to the law firm. Previously, he left the law firm to serve as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Public Corruption and Government Contract Fraud Unit in the Central district of California in Los Angeles. The year 1990 marked his first return to Gibson Dunn as a Partner.
Three years later, Stevens was appointed as the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of California by President Clinton. At that time, with an age of 35 years, he was one of the youngest US Attorneys in the nation.
After long service with the Department of Justice (DOJ), Stevens and another former U.S. Attorney founded the boutique law firm Stevens, O'Connell & Jacobs. This law firm focuses on government and internal investigations. Last year, Stevens focused primarily on working as a mediator with JAMS, government claims and teaching a course on mediation at the U.C. Davis Law School.
Speaking on Stevens' return to Gibson Dunn, Ken Doran, Chairman and Managing Partner of the law firm expressed his delight and said, "He is an outstanding lawyer with a stellar reputation both in Northern California and the nation. Stevens will practice in the areas of government and internal investigations, compliance reviews, and white collar defense with focus on False Claims Act, Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, health care fraud, antitrust and procurement fraud. He will also be working on related matters such as civil litigation alleging fraud, unfair competition and unjust business practices.
