Three Lawyers Named to Oversee Class Counsel
Andrew Marks of Crowell & Moring, Henry Sanders of Chestnut, Sanders, Sanders, Pettaway & Campbell and Gregorio Francis of Morgan & Morgan will be overseeing a September 1 fairness hearing to reach a settlement in the landmark Black Farmers' Class Action Lawsuit that's been ongoing for at least three years. At the heart of the case is tens of thousands black farmers who say the U.S. Department of Agriculture discriminated against them when claims were never resolved. Calling it a ''landmark achievement for civil rights in the United States'', one lead attorney says all that's left now is preparing a breakdown of various fees. Legal fees could amount to anything between $51 million to nearly $93 million of the whopping $1.25 billion appropriated by Congress.
