Freshfields Plans to Launch Pro Bono Network
To better coordinate offices doing pro bono work, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer
plans to launch an international pro bono network.

Clarissa O'Callaghan, head of pro bono for Freshfields, will take up a global position to monitor and bring alignment to global activities. One of her goals is to put in place a coordinated approach to obtaining pro bono work, particularly in their European offices where participation is not quite as high as in New York and Hong Kong.

Although some firms may be making cuts during the economic downturn, Freshfields has pledged to ''encourage more people to get involved'' in pro bono work.

WilmerHale Opens Frankfurt Office

US firm WilmerHale has opened a Frankfurt office after enticing four Mayer Brown partners to join them. The four partners will be joined by Christian Crones, one of WilmerHale's corporate partners from Berlin.

In 1993, WilmerHale established itself as the first US firm in Berlin and primarily focused on regulatory practices. Expansion into Germany remained the logical strategy, after growing the IP and corporate practices.

Akin Gump Names New Partners

The Lawyer reported today that Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld will promote 15 of its lawyers to partner positions effective January 1, 2009. The new partners include one London lawyer, 12 US lawyers, and two corporate lawyers from Moscow and Abu Dhabi.
